Many people are looking forward to a Thanksgiving feast this long weekend but for others, the holiday is looking bleaker.
“Anyone alone or in need or will not be having Thanksgiving dinner, they’re welcome to come and join us between 11:30 and 1:30 at Sacred Heart Auditorium, behind the church on Ingledew St,” says Bernie Goold, former president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. “We just don’t want people to be alone or depressed. It’s about building community. Lots of people are working poor now and can’t afford a turkey or trimmings to have at home so we invite them to come.”
Last year, St. Vincent de Paul’s served 800 meals on Thanksgiving Sunday.
“We serve our meals. People line up for everything in their lives so it’s a sit down and they are served their meal and dessert. We’re just so in awe and grateful to the community who make this possible with their donations.”
Goold says the sit down dinner is made possible by donations from the community and with the help of Chef Ron Christian from CNC’s Culinary Arts Department. He and several of his students volunteer to prepare and serve the dinner. Further support comes from the Prince George community.
“It’s the public who keep us opening our doors 365 days a year,” Goold says. “We’re so privileged to serve people. We get the accolades but it’s the public that deserves the credit.”
