If you’ve been thinking about adopting a furry feline friend or two, early October could be the perfect time.
The BC SPCA is encouraging the adoption of adult cats by offering half price adoption fees.
“Our adult cat price is $140 but that is discounted by half Oct. 1 to 14,” says Jamie Walsh, Branch Manager at the North Cariboo SPCA. “We have approximately 25 cats in the shelter right now and many more in foster care. That is just adult cats and not kittens.”
While the appeal of kittens is undeniable, Walsh says there are a few reasons to consider adoption an older animal.
“You know whether or not they like other cats or dogs or how they’ll settle in with a family. You kind of know what you’re going to get. They’re sweet, they’re loving. They’re usually a little more calm than kitten so if you don’t want a kitten ripping around your house, you can get that cuddlebug out of an adult cat.”
Any cat over 6 months is considered an adult and even older animals still have plenty of love and life left in them.
“Most of our adult cats right now are ranging from 1 year old up to a 15 year old cat that’s looking for a home right now. We have cats come in that are 22 years old. As long as they’re well taken care of and they’re happy and they’re healthy, you’ll get plenty of years out of an adult cat.”
