This summer the Prince George School District announced that six elementary schools and one daycare tested positive for elevated levels of lead in their drinking water.
The testing took place as a result of similar discoveries in schools in Prince Rupert.
At last night’s meeting, SD57 Trustees approved an application to the Provincial Government asking for $375,000 in funding to deal with the issue at four schools. Trustees assured that the remaining facilities either have already been dealt with, or will be through other renovations. (full story)
Through the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, MY PG NOW has obtained the detailed test results for SD57 48 facilities, sampled between May 18th and June 9th. L&M Engineering also tested the water for elevated levels of copper, for which 38 school failed. Copper above recommended levels does not pose any health risks, but can affect taste and staining of plumbing and laundry
Looking at lead, Nukko Lake Elementary fared the worst, with the boys washroom testing nearly five times the limit. A water fountain at Heritage Elementary tested almost three times over.
Impacted schools are undertaking a full flush of the water system everyday to mitigate any risks while repairs are made.
