Tentative agreement reached in Canada Post dispute

Canada Post has reached a tentative agreement with its union, avoiding a strike.

The two sides bargained with the help of special mediator William Kaplan over the past few days and into the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Although details are sparse at this point – the agreement is for two years instead of a typical four.

Canada Post says the shorter agreement reflects the uncertainty and challenges facing the corporation.

“The issues facing the Corporation, with declining mail volumes and a growing pension obligation, are complex.” read a statement from the corporation.

Local 812 President Tami Brushey is happy to of stayed on the job throughout the entire process, “we wanted to be at work every day we wanted to be delivering and that’s what happened.”

Brushey herself was still quite in the dark on the details of the deal when contacted Tuesday afternoon. She says she hopes the tentative agreements goes out to members “sooner than later.”

“We haven’t achieved all of our demands, but apparently what they have was good enough for our negotiators to unanimously recommend them to our national executive.” she added saying that it appears pensions have been left intact and a pay equity process has been established.

The agreement will still need to be ratified by member votes in the coming weeks.
