Summer is an active time of year for thieves.
There have been 75 thefts from vehicles and 57 break and enters in Prince George so far this month.
The Prince George RCMP are encouraging the public to be alert and take steps to protect their property and deter thieves.
Lock doors and windows whenever you leave the house, even if you’re just out in the back yard. The same goes for the doors and windows on your vehicle. Security cameras, alarm systems and anti-theft devices in cars can all help deter thieves.
Getting to know your neighbours and keeping an eye out for suspicious activity can also make things difficult for would-be robbers.
If you are the victim of property theft, report it immediately to the local detachment. The RCMP say timely reporting of crimes gives them a better chance of apprehending the thieves.
Recording serial numbers, taking pictures of property and storing them electronically can increase the likelihood of recovering stolen property.
The detachment says they see a spike in thefts every year during the summer but a little common sense and a few precautions can keep you from becoming a statistic.
