Fair season is here!
The BC Northern Exhibition is happening next weekend and 4H BC Youth representative Mackenzie Kerr says this year’s showing will be bigger than ever.
“This year we have so many market animals and livestock coming to the fair, we’ve actually expanded our barns,” says 4H BC youth representative Mackenzie Kerr. “This year we have three instead of two. The beef and swine will be filling one big 4H barn. Beside that we have poultry and rabbit and next to that is the sheep, goat and lamb barn.”
The animals will be auctioned on Saturday night. Kerr says it’s a great opportunity to get yourself some organic, humanely raised meat while supporting BC’s future farmers.
She says raising, showing and finally auctioning their animals is a huge achievement
“The bigger picture really is you’re supporting young farmers, you’re supporting the future agriculture industry. That’s the key and a lot of the money from those animals will go toward raising another animal next year.”
And there’s more to 4H than just farming skills.
“The kids are learning so much more than just how to feed the pig some grain and bring it to auction. They learn how to market their animal – they bring fliers and market it on the radio. They’re learning amazing lifelong skills that you can’t learn in other places.”
Kerr says participating in 4H has shaped her life and support for 4H is important for the future of Canadian farming.
