First Foodie Friday finds fans in Prince George

The City’s first Foodie Friday is getting glowing reviews.

Councillor Jillian Merrick says the event makes great use of the public green space near city hall.

“There’s an exceptional restaurant culture in downtown Prince George. Some of the restaurants you see here are from downtown and some are from elsewhere so just bringing them all to one spot where people can try them is great.”

While yesterday’s gloomy evening had a few people doubting many would come out to the event, the crowds did turn up.

“We thought it might not get that busy but actually it was pretty busy,” says Reza Akbari, owner of Shiraz Cafe and Restaurant. “It was a mini-Summerfest that we had here today. Pretty much all the vendors sold out – they had to bring more food.”

Akbari says he and his team enjoyed the atmosphere.

“This is actually me coming out with my culinary art team and they see the excitement and the passion. This kind of face to face interaction of the entire Shiraz team with customers – it’s amazing. It creates a very fun, happy vibe around downtown.”

Merrick says the lunch time event is about getting people out and about downtown.

“I think it just really stems from a desire for people to make use of public space in downtown Prince George. One thing that’s really nice is that there are thousands and thousands of people who work downtown so it’s really nice to have a lunchtime event that’s accessible to them.”

If you missed out this week, you’ll have several more chances.

Foodie Fridays will take place every Friday from 10am until 2pm until the end of September in front of City Hall.
