When it comes to battling drug activity in BC, coordination between law enforcement agencies is crucial but the public has a role to play as well, according to Solicitor General Mike Morris.
“Fighting crime in any community is the responsibility of the community. The police can’t do it on their own. We rely on the public. We rely on the public to come forward and report suspicious activities. We rely on the public to come forward and report any activity that indicates there’s drugs being sold in a neighbourhood.”
That includes communities like Prince George, which has seen a recent rash of supposedly drug-related violence in the past few weeks.
“From a local perspective, every bit of information we get, we record, track and investigate,” says Prince George RCMP Corporal Craig Douglass. “We amalgamate that information, not only within the detachment but with other agencies such as CFSU-BC, and we take that information and then we can take action. We get lots of information but certainly there’s more out there that needs to be provided to us. Once we have more information then it’s a greater chance of success. The public often thinks they don’t want to bother the police with this information.”
Douglass says anyone who suspects illegal activity is taking place in their neighbourhood should report it to the RCMP.
He says the Prince George RCMP are actively investigating the shooting that took place on Thursday morning at a home on Gould Crescent, just a block away from where a man was fatally shot in his driveway. No new information is available at this time.
Douglass says they’re seeking information from the public to aid in the investigation but that there is no reason for the average citizen to fear for their safety.
