Four resolutions submitted by the Prince George Chamber of Commerce were adopted at this week’s BC Chamber of Commerce AGM.
Prince George Chamber President Cindy Pohl says the resolutions ranged in focus from protection of the foresty industry to funding for the Brownfield property remediation.
“There was one on small airports, changing the financial structure to be more supportive of our small airports,” says Prince George Chamber President Cindy Pohl. Another resolution focused on protections for the forestry industry.
The most contentious resolution was a move to support Enbridge’s request for an extension to their federal environmental certificate.
But the item that saw the most debate, according to PG Chamber President Cindy Pohl, was a resolution in support of Enbridge’s request for an extension to the sunset clause on its Northern Gateway Pipeline project.
“It gives them extra time to be able to get the rest of their 209 conditions done. They’ve already put millions into the project so we thought it was important to respect the money they put into it and give them the opportunity to be able to finish what they started whether or not the project actually happens.”
After much debate, the resolution eventually received unanimous support from the Chamber.
Pohl was pleased with the support for a resolution regarding funding for the Brownfield property remediation.
“It went over really well. It used to be there was funding from the government for remediation of these properties. That changed and we thought it was important to get some of this funding back because for business to have land that just sits there not doing anything for many, many years doesn’t make sense to anyone.”
The BC Chamber will now lobby the provincial government to reinstate funding for the project.
