Dozens marched against Monsanto in Prince George today, joining millions in cities around the world.
“We join millions across the food for food security and free the seed, against genetic manipulation that patents the seed,” says local spokesperson Karmjeet Manhas. “Something that’s free for everyone forever can’t be patented. It’s protection for food for all generations.”
Manhas says people are becoming more interested in how their food is grown and that the pro-organic, anti-GMO movement is having an impact.
“This has already worked. 35% of the sales for all genetically modified foods has shifted to organic food. Costco is going all organic produce. They’re providing farmland for people to grow organic food and the market shift is only increasing as people become more and more aware.”
The movement has scored some sizeable victories against the chemical company this year, according to Manhas.
“This year there was some major lawsuits overturned and the World Health Organization made a statement that the number one used pesticide that works with genetically modified foods, Roundup, probably causes cancer.”
Manhas says the march is about ensuring a safe secure food supply and preventing the patenting of seeds, as well as raising awareness about the risks of genetically modified organisms.
Dozens attended today’s event and held up signs at the corner of Highway 16 and Ferry. The event also featured an address by local Green Party CEO Karen McDowell and performances by local musicians.
