It looks like the old Haldi Road School will finally serve a new purpose.
Council approved a few bylaw amendments to allow the empty building to become a dog kennel.
Neighbour Tore Pettersen is in favour of the change but wants better communication with the owner.
“Right now, we’ve just heard the remarks come through the agent and we’d like to hear exactly how they’re going to operate this facility in order that it will not affect the neighbourhood and particularly close neighbours adversely,” he says.
Realtor Don Kehler spoke on behalf of the proponent and said there will be an open house for the neighbourhood. There were also other concerns from the gallery, including ones about noise and the aquifer. The proponent promised to renovate the walls to make sure noise won’t be an issue, and Mayor Lyn Hall says the aquifer should be just fine.
“Let’s not forget that that was a school at one time and housed 150-180 plus staff so their consumption of water was pretty high. I think that as a kennel their consumption won’t be anywhere near what it was at one time as a school,” he says.
The proponent also promised the kennel won’t be used for breeding.
