Two shot dead in Granisle police standoff

Two people are dead following a police shooting in Granisle about 325 kilometers northwest of Prince George.

On Thursday, at about 12:33pm, RCMP were called to a neighbour dispute involving a handgun in the Village of Granisle.

The RCMP says officers arrived at 1:22pm and established a perimeter while trying to make contact with the residents.

One person exited the home confronting police and shots were fired at about 2:50pm. A second person followed and more shots were fired. Both people were attended to by paramedics who were staged nearby, however both died.

CKNW is reporting that Harvey Williams with the Cheslatta Carrier Nation has told them the victims are his 77 year old ex-wife Shirley, and 39 year old son, Joe.

He told CKNW the pair don’t own a handgun, and was surprised to hear a weapon was involved.

There were no injuries to police. The circumstances, timing and actions of all involved are now subject to an independent investigation by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia.

The scene and evidence have been secured pending their arrival.
