A grass fire near the Valley View subdivision in the north of Prince George has forced the evacuation several homes.

Deputy Fire Chief Cliff Warner says a grass fire spread into the trees due to high winds causing them to undertake a “tactical evacuation of about 40 homes. “The fire is mostly knocked down, but with the high winds we are just keeping a close eye on it.”

Warner says the flames came as close as “a few feet” in some cases to the homes in the area.

BC Wildfire Branch crews are also on scene assisting with the effort.

Emergency crews on scene say the fire was sparked some time after 430pm.

“Everything went very well, the crews did a great job of getting to it quickly and knocking it down.” Warner added saying they and the BC Wildfire Branch will monitor the site over the next few days to make sure there are no flare ups.

The Prince George RCMP says local residents have been allowed to return to their homes on foot, vehicles are not allowed in the area, as hoses and other equipment are on the roads.

UPDATE: The fire has been deemed accidental. (new story)
