BC Lung Association creates quicker deadly radon detector

You can now see just how safe your home or workspace is in a fraction of the time of what it used to take.

The BC Lung Association has created short-term radon testing kits. These claim to give you an accurate reading in as little as two days.

Radon Aware Program Manager Britt Swoveland says the old methods could take up to a year to find results.

“The real advantage of a short-term test if you’re feeling really concerned and you do know you’re in a high-risk area such as Prince George – we know there is about 1 in 3 homes above the Health Canada guidelines – you can determine if there is potentially a radon problem in your home in a shorter amount of time,” she says.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind only smoking.

There are two methods of short-term testing. One can give you a reading in a few days for $250 – $300. The other can take between 10 and 30 days and costs about $60.

The BCLA recommends using both the short- and long-term tests for the most accurate results.
