If you’ve got teenagers in the house, you might want to take them down to the Prince George Civic Centre this weekend.
Victoria-based mom Ali Berman co-founded TeenFest with her husband, Wayne. Together the couple have three children. They got the idea to create the event when the family moved from Toronto to Victoria.
“We noticed that the 2 pre-teens were going to the internet all the time and going to YouTube to find everything they needed. And we couldn’t figure out why there were no workshops for teens and why businesses weren’t more in front of teens to help mentor and guide them and show them the way.”
After 4 successful events in Victoria and others across BC and into Alberta, TeenFest is coming to Prince George for the first time. Berman says the inaugural event will have lots on offer to keep 12-18 year olds entertained.
“We have a fabulous teen talent competition that’s going to be going on. We have some performers. We have over 30 exhibitors that are going to be coming out to showcase what they can offer the youth and families and we’re just extremely excited about coming to Prince George this weekend,” she says.
There will also be interactive sports and games for active teens. Activites will be divided into five areas: Life & Education, Fashion & Beauty, Cool Stuff, Technology & Gaming and Health & Wellness.
“We love to go to smaller communities. We find the youth in the smaller communities don’t really know who’s in their backyard and who is a part of the community. So we thought, why not bring this to Prince George?”
TeenFest is free and runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Prince George Civic Centre this Saturday, March 5. More information can be found on TeenFest’s website.
