A special avalanche warning has been issued for much of the central interior’s mountain regions, in light of the past week’s snowstorms.
Backcountry enthusiasts are being advised to use caution in the Cariboo, Northern Rockies, and North and South Columbia ranges.
Avalanche Canada spokesperson James Floyer says the snowpack had been relatively stable to this point, but the situation has changed due to a weak layer that is particularly prevalent at lower elevations.
Floyer says those heading into the backcountry this weekend should stick to simple, low-angled terrain, even when travelling below the treeline.
