PG-Peace River MP Bob Zimmer say he’s pleased by the federal government’s decision to extend the deadline for settling 25 thousand syrian refugees.
Zimmer previously submitted a letter on behalf of his constituents in an appeal to slow the process, and it looks like he got his wish.
“Our biggest concern was that it would be a hurried process, and less scrutiny would be applied. The SCrutiny needed the time and it looks like the Prime Minister adjusted the timeline, so we’re happy with that.”
The original plan would have seen 25 thousand refugees settled by January first… Now, 10 thousand people will be brought in by the new year, with the remainder coming within the following two months.
“It takes quite a bit of time to process a refugee at the best of times, and to have such a large number come through without due scrutiny, we’re worried about certain individuals squeaking through.”
All government assisted and privately sponsored refugees coming to Canada will be identified by the end of next month, but in the meantime, Zimmer is still waiting on a few more adjustments.
“The part where we want to see more action is dealing with ISIS, keeping planes in the air, and battling them before they make it over here.”
