Garbage Collection Fees on the Rise

Residents will be paying more for garbage collection in 2016.

The city has decided to increase the Solid Waste User Fee by 6% over the next three years. The increase will account for rising landfill costs.

“It’s not just tipping fees” said Councillor Jillian Merrick. “Landfills are very expensive. They are very environmentally hazardous sites and the reality is that they will fill up.”

By 2018, Residents with larger garbage bins will be paying 15 dollars more than they do now, while smaller bins will cost 9 dollars more.

“We’re probably recycling more than we used to” said Mayor Lyn Hall. “The problem is that the recycling that we’re doing is not diminishing the tonnage that we’re putting into the landfill.”

Tipping fees at the regional district landfill are scheduled to increase by 25% over the next 4 years.
