MLB:

The New York Mets have optioned first baseman Jared Young of Prince George to their Triple-A farm club in Syracuse.

The 29-year-old Young had a .211 batting average in 10 spring training games with the Mets.

 

WHL:

Former Prince George Cougars forward Hunter Laing of the Saskatoon Blades is the WHL Player of the Week.

Laing scored four goals and added an assist for five points in a pair of divisional wins that helped the Blades secure a playoff berth.

The Prince George Cougars play their final four regular season games on home ice.

They host the (22-33-7-1) Wenatchee Wild Friday and Saturday and the Victoria Royals on March 21st and 22nd.

The (38-20-4-2) Cougars are tied with the (36-16-3-7) Royals for top spot in the B.C. Division but Victoria has two games in hand.

The Royals have six remaining, with one home game followed by five on the road.

Victoria will host Vancouver Friday in the first of a home and home and the two teams also meet Saturday in Langley.

The Royals visit Kamloops on Tuesday, March 18th, Kelowna on March 19th and P.G. on March 21st and 22nd.

The Prince George Spruce Kings play their next game on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 when they host the (29-18-1) Sherwood Park Crusaders.

The (19-24-4-1) Spruce Kings are two points behind the (18-21-8-1) Langley Rivermen for the 8th and final playoff spot in the BCHL Interior Conference.

Both teams have six games left.

The Canucks are one point behind the (30-23-10) Calgary Flames for the 2nd and final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals visit Anaheim this evening.

The 39-year-old Ovechkin is 9 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career record of 894.

The (42-14-8) Caps have 18 regular season games left.

BC Elite Hockey League:

The Under-18 Cariboo Cougars host the Vancouver North West Hawks in the BC Elite Hockey League semifinals.

Games will be played at Kin 1 Friday afternoon at 3:45, Saturday afternoon at 3:00 and, if needed, Sunday morning at 9:00.

The Under-18 Female Northern Capitals visit the Fraser Valley Rush in the best-of-3 BC Elite Hockey League semis.

Games are Langley are slated for Friday night at 6:15, Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and, if necessary, Sunday morning at 9:30.
