WHL:

Vancouver Giants  3  Prince George Cougars  1  (Sunday)

The loss ended the Cougars 7-game winning streak.

Burke Hood made 36 saves as Prince George outshot Vancouver 37-28 in front of 3,919 fans in Langley.

Josh Ravensbergen blocked 25 shots with the last Vancouver goal going into an empty net.

Sniper Cameron Schmidt, who is from P.G., notched a goal and an assist for the (31-24-8) Giants, who are 6th in the Western Conference, just two points behind Portland and one ahead of Tri-Cities.

Prince George Cougars  4   Everett Silvertips 3  (Saturday)

It was the Cougars first victory in Everett since 2019.

The (38-20-4-2) Cougars are tied with the (36-16-3-7) Victoria Royals for top spot in the B.C. Division but the Royals hold two games in hand.

The Cougars play their final four regular season games on home ice.

They host the (22-33-7-1) Wenatchee Wild Friday and Saturday and Victoria on March 21st and 22nd.

The Royals have six remaining, with one home game followed by five on the road.

Victoria will host Vancouver Friday in the first of a home and home and the two teams also meet Saturday in Langley.

The Royals visit Kamloops on Tuesday, March 18th, Kelowna on March 19th and P.G. on March 21st and 22nd.

Alex Ovechkin scored into an empty net for the Washington Capitals in a 4-2 Sunday victory over the Seattle Kraken.

The 39-year-old Ovechkin is 9 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career record of 894.

The (42-14-8) Caps have 18 regular season games left with their next contest Tuesday night at 7:00 at Anaheim.

BC Elite Hockey League:

Under-18 Cariboo Cougars  3  Thompson Blazers  0  (Saturday)
Under-18 Cariboo Cougars  9  Thompson Blazers  4  (Friday)

The first place U-18 Cariboo Cougars win the series 2-0 to advance to the best-of-3 semifinals against the Vancouver North West Hawks.

Games will be played at Kin 1 Friday afternoon at 3:45, Saturday afternoon at 3:00 and, if needed, Sunday morning at 9:00.

The Under-18 Female Northern Capitals visit the Fraser Valley Rush in the best-of-3 semis Friday night at 6:15, Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and, if necessary, Sunday morning at 9:30 with all games in Langley.

Curling:  

Brad Jacobs and his Alberta team won the Montana’s Brier in Kelowna and will represent Canada at the world men’s curling championship in Moose Jaw March 29th to April 6th.

Jacobs scored three in the last end to beat Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone 5-3 in the final.

It is the second career Brier title for Jacobs, who also won in 2013.

Jacobs beat defending champion Brad Gushue (Canada) 7-5 in the semi final.

The loss for Gushue ended his bid for a record fourth straight Brier title and seventh overall.

High School Basketball:

North Central teams finished out of the top 10 at the B.C. High School Boys Basketball Provincial Championships in Langley.

PGSS finished 0-4 and 16th in 4A.

College Heights went 1-3 to claim 14th in 3A.

Nechako Valley lost its first two and won its last two to finish 13th in 2A.

Cedars Christian ended up 0-4 and 16th in 1A.

Also in 1A, Northside Christian of Vanderhoof lost its first two and won its last two to end up 13th while Houston Christian (from the Northwest zone) placed 9th with a 3-1 record (a loss followed by three victories).

 

NBA:

The (21-43) Toronto Raptors, with just 18 games left in their season, host the Washington Wizards tonight (Monday at 4:30).

The Raptors lost to Washington 118-117 on Saturday.

The Raptors are 5 games behind the Chicago Bulls for the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.
