The Prince George Crime Stoppers Society will take steps to prevent identity theft this weekend.
People are welcome to bring bills and personal documents for shredding at the group’s 3rd event.
“Identity theft is becoming one of the fastest-growing crimes in the world,” says PG Crimestoppers President Jack Hooper, “People don’t realize that a simple thing like a bill from BC Hydro will give a thief enough information to apply for a credit card.”
Shredding is by donation, and all proceeds will support the non-profit Crimestoppers, and Hooper says the group has to look at different options to keep operating…
“The only way we can exist is and be sustainable is to ask the public to support the things that we do. So every year we look at different events and venues.”
This year, the group decided to do something close to their cause.
“People don’t spend enough time looking after their own information. They worry about all of the big things but they often overlook the small stuff. So what we want to do is get that information and shred it so no one can deal with it.”
The event takes place from 10am to 2pm at the Wal Mart parking lot this Saturday.
