People living in the Vanway, Beaverly, and Haldi areas of the City had a lot of good things to say at tonight’s Talktober meeting.
Boards and paper regarding development in the community quickly filled up with suggestions for slightly varied housing.
“They love the country lifestyle, the rural lifestyle they have in the area. They want to see that preserved,” says City Planner Dana Hawkins, “More single, detached dwellings, more pedestrian connectivity, sidewalks and walkways, things like that.”
Hawkins noted that many people were interested in the idea of senior’s housing and transitional housing aimed at people in their early 60’s.
The intention, again, being that people can preserve their lifestyle in the area by eliminating stairs in a home and providing easy entry.
Hawkins says residents didn’t want to see commercial businesses and packed subdivisions moving in on the area.
Staff added one lot near Vanway Elementary is zoned commercially, but there currently aren’t any bidders on the lot, and there are many landscape factors that make it undesirable for developers.
“Development is influenced by Developers,” says Hawkins, “We get applications in, say for rezoning or development, and we will look to our policy, but it’s also great to have this consultation to see what the neighbourhood is saying too.”
According to data obtained at the meeting, one commercial permit has been granted in the neighbourhood over the past 4 years
