BC General Employers Union calls for increased Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement officer safety

After recent incidents involving Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement officers, the BC General Employers Union (BCGEU) says safety has reached a tipping point.

They said in a release officers are increasingly being exposed to violence and dangers on the job, highlighting two incidents in the province.

One of them was in Prince George in relation to the weigh scale arson back in December 2024, which remains under investigation, and the other in Kamloops where an officer was assaulted last week.

“These workers are subjected to escalating violence and intimidation while simply trying to keep our roads safe for all users, and we need immediate action from the government to address this growing risk.” said BCGEU President, Paul Finch.

Other incidents include officers consistently reporting their vehicles and worksites being targeted for violent actions.

Inadequate training, outdated communication systems, and lack of proper reporting protocols only compound the risk, prompting a call on the provincial government to work with officers and provide the resources to do their jobs.

That includes upgrading communication systems and improving training protocols to establish a workplace focused on health and safety.
