Bond honoured as legislature kicks off Women’s History Month

Prince George- Valemount MLA Shirley Bond is among six women being honoured as trailblazers in BC’s justice system.

Bond says it was a special day in legislature as they began to recognize Women’s History Month.

“It was really very special for me to be included in an unbelievably exemplary group of women who have ‘blazed a trail’ as they said in the justice system.”

Bond was recognized as the first female British Columbia Attorney General in the province’s history.

“It’s something that I am very proud of, it was a very, very difficult job,” adds Bond, “But I am also very proud to be a women who loves where I live, I love northern British Columbia, and I hope people will take a moment and reflect on the amazing progress we’ve made.”

Other honourees included Helen Gregory MacGill; BC’s first female judge, Mabel French; the first woman called to the BC bar, Patricia Proudfoot; the first female appointee to the BC Supreme Court, Edith Paterson; the first female member of the Law Society of BC to become a judge, and Beverly McLachlin; the first female Chief Justice of the B.C. Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Canada.

“There is still more work to be done, we need to care for those who are vulnerable, support young women in their career choices, and a number of other things we have to do,” noted Bond, “But as we start Women’s History Month, it’s a chance to look back and celebrate, and I was very honoured to be included.”
