Province to inject funding to bolster veterinarian staffing in rural BC

New funding is being implemented in an effort to attract and retain livestock veterinarians in rural BC.

The program would focus more in northern BC, not only supporting recruitment and retainment, but also funding for equipment and training.

Nechako Valley Animal Health Services Veterinarian, Cori Stephen said in a news release “meeting the demand for animal care in a rural area means long and busy days and nights, especially with the shortage of veterinarians in our rural communities.”

“I’m hopeful the new program will help rural, small-town practices like ours attract and retain veterinarians and technologists interested in joining a rural practice, which, in turn, will allow us to provide care to more animals in need in our area.”

Secondary priority areas include clinics in the southern Cariboo, Thompson, Okanagan, southeast, Vancouver Island, Lillooet and Pemberton.

A maximum of $25,000 will be available per clinic for supports such as hiring bonuses for vets that commit for one or more years, software and training, and local planning for sustainable delivery of services.

First intake for applications is from December 17th, to January 15th.

More information about the program can be found on the Province’s website here.
