Prince George Ice Oval needing cold weather shift, new volunteers

Mother Nature is throwing another curve ball as to when the Prince George Ice Oval will open for the first time this season.

Daytime highs are expected to remain above the freezing mark well into next week.

Ice Oval Society President, Kathy Lewis spoke with MyPGNow.com.

“We may have to wait until the temperatures drop. It may actually not be a bad thing for us as we get some water down and snow as well and with this melt, hopefully it doesn’t completely disappear and, once it does freeze we might have a bit of a base to work with.”

Lewis added they started hose flooding during the city’s first cold and snowy stretch in mid-November but there were a few ruts in the ice after getting overly excited with the flooding process.

They were unable to get a base established before the weather warmed up again.

Like many organizations, Lewis and company are looking for some new blood to assist with the ice making efforts and some other odd-jobs around the facility.

“If we can flood four times a day, which is demanding for our volunteers we can get the base ready in about seven days. But, if we have to wait for colder temperatures like in the evening or early morning and we don’t have sufficient volunteers than it can take us quite a bit longer than that.”

“We also need new blood coming into our volunteer pool. As people get older, they find other things to do and we lose some of our more experienced people – we are always looking for folks that are interested in coming out and learning how to run the equipment,” added Lewis.
