A whirlwind travel schedule wasn’t enough to keep the Mount Royal Cougars from earning a road victory.
Tamara Djurisic’s goal in the 21st minute turned out to be the game-winner in a 1-0 victory on Sunday over the UNBC Timberwolves in Canada West women’s soccer action from Masich Place Stadium.
The Cougars, who improved to 3-6-2 saw their travel itinerary turn into a brief episode of the Amazing Race.
After finishing their road game on Friday against UBC, the Cougars boarded a plane from Vancouver to Prince George on Saturday – unfortunately, when they initially made it to PG they were forced to turn back after the plane was unable to land at YXS due to weather conditions.
From there, the Calgary-based varsity team flew from Vancouver to Calgary on Sunday morning and then directly to PG, arriving in the northern capital a few hours prior to game time.
The start of Sunday’s contest was pushed back to 1:45pm from its original noon slot as a result.
Brityn Hinsche made 11 saves in defeat for the Timberwolves who drop to 1-9-0 on the season.
UNBC wraps up the home portion of its regular season schedule Friday and Saturday night against the top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (10-0) at Masich Place Stadium with kickoff slated for 6pm each night.
In men’s action, the Timberwolves held UBC off the scoresheet for 60 minutes before the floodgates started to open.
Henri Godbout, Jost Hausendorf and Patrick Braun rippled the onion bag for the Thunderbirds enroute to a 3-0 victory on Saturday.
Logan Pierce made six saves in the loss for UNBC (1-11-2). UBC improves to 9-0-2 and is first in the Pacific Division.
The Timberwolves are on a bye this week before wrapping up the regular season October 18th and 19th in Kamloops against the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack (1-9-2).
