District of Fraser-Fort George eyeing secondary-suite bylaw

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has launched a survey in hopes of getting public feedback on secondary suites.

The District is considering amending a bylaw that would allow suites on properties 2 acres or larger, but doesn’t apply to homes within the boundaries of Prince George, McBride, Valemount, or Mackenzie.

A survey has been posted on the Regional District website, and a series of open houses will be held over the next few weeks, starting with a meeting at Pineview Community Hall on September 29th at 7:00pm.

“Our survey has been active for a little over a week now, and we’ve seen quite a bit of activity on the website, as well as some inquiries in our office towards the ‘Home Sweet Home’ initiative,” says Planning Leader Kenna Jonkman, “We just want to gain some feedback from the public. After that, the information will be forwarded to the Board for further consideration.”

Supporters of the amendment say the suites increase income while maintaining rural populations, while taking many different forms.

“The typical ones are usually a secondary suite in an attached garage with some upstairs living quarters, or when you convert your basement into a suite,” explains Jonkman.

According to the Regional District, A secondary suite is defined to be located in a single family residence and cannot exceed 90 square metres (969 sqft), and 40% of the total finished living area of the residence.

Public can have their say until the survey closes on October 16th.
