Updated: Police in PG quickly nab a robbery suspect

Updated 3:45 pm, Tuesday, September 10th:

The Prince George RCMP didn’t have to look long after being called to the Hart on a report of a robbery this morning. (Tuesday)

Shortly after 10:30, the Prince George RCMP received a report of a man on Weisbrod Road close to the Hart Highway, who appeared to be carrying a firearm.

Police say they received a second report, stating the same suspect had recently robbed a liquor store on the 4300 block of Nordic Drive.

“Our frontline police officers immediately attended the area and located the suspect near the liquor store, where he then fled from police while brandishing the weapon,” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper.

“He ran from there into a local convenience store, which was quickly cleared of the public to ensure their safety.”

An officer, equipped with a conducted energy weapon, attended the location and successfully deployed the device, stopping the suspect from fleeing further.

The suspect was taken into police custody, where he will remain until he can attend court.

Cooper noted a school in the area went into “hold and secure” protocols as the event unfolded.

“Fifteen minutes elapsed from the time we received the first 9-1-1 call to the time the suspect was taken into custody,” Cooper said.

“This is just one more example of how quickly our frontline police officers work to maintain public safety.”

According to police, the suspect sustained a minor injury during the incident, and was cleared medically at the hospital following his arrest.

No other injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.
