Hockey:

The Prince George Cougars have signed 16-year-old forward Ryan Richter of Smithers to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.

Richter played the 2023-24 season with the Burnaby Winter Club U18 program of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) where he notched 23 points (3-20-23) in 31 games.

The PG Cougars play a pair of exhibition games this weekend in Edson, Alberta.

They meet the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday afternoon at 1:00 (PT) and Sunday morning at 11.

The Prince George Spruce Kings start their four-game pre-season schedule on the road.

The Spruce Kings visit the Coquitlam Express tonight (Friday) at 7:00 and the Surrey Eagles Saturday night at 6:00 at the Surrey Eagles.

Paralympics: (in Paris)

Jennifer McCreesh of Smithers is part of the Canadian Paralympic women’s sitting volleyball team that lost 3-0 to China in the semifinals of the Paris Games.

Canada will play for bronze Saturday (6 AM PT) against Brazil.

The Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team, which includes former UNBC student Bo Hedges of Fort St. John lost 80-42 to the USA in the Paralympics semifinals.

Canada will battle Germany for bronze Saturday (7 AM).

The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team will go against the Netherlands today (Friday 12:30 PM) in the Paralympic Games semifinals.

Former UNBC Timberwolves basketball player, Kady Dandeneau, led Canada with 33 points and 13 rebounds in a 71-53 quarterfinal victory over Germany Wednesday.

The medal games will be played on Sunday.

Joel Ewert of Prince George was a player with the Canadian wheelchair rugby team that finished 6th at the Paris Games.

Canada West Soccer:

Both the UNBC Timberwolves men’s and women’s soccer teams are in action this weekend.

The (0-3-1) UNBC men will host the (1-2-1) UBC Okanagan Heat tonight and Saturday night at 6:00 at Masich Place Stadium.

The UNBC women will open its Canada West season at (0-1) Mount Royal today (4 PM PT) and at (1-0) Victoria Sunday afternoon at 1:00.

NFL: (Regular season opener)

Kansas City Chiefs  27  Baltimore Ravens  20

There is a special Friday game in the NFL and it will be played in Brazil as the Philadelphia Eagles face the Green Bay Packers (5:15).

CFL:

Week 14 of the CFL season begins tonight (Friday 4:30) with the (6-6) B.C. Lions at the (10-1) Montreal Alouettes.

B.C. and (6-6) Winnipeg share top spot in the West Division, one point ahead of (5-6-1) Saskatchewan, and four in front of (4-7) Calgary and (4-8) Edmonton.

PG Kodiaks football: 

The (1-5) Prince George Kodiaks play their first game in a couple of weeks when they visit the (2-3) Valley Huskers Saturday night at 7:00 in the BC Football Conference.

(The remaining Kodiak schedule includes: home against the (6-0) Okanagan Sun (Sat. Sept. 14th at 6 PM), home against the (1-5) Kamloops Broncos (Sat. Sept. 28th at 6 PM) and at Kamloops (Sat. Oct. 5th at 6 PM).

The Kodiaks, who have dropped their last five, have scored 126 points (average of 21 per game) while allowing 282 (average of 47 per game).

MLB:

Seattle Mariners  6  Oakland Athletics  4

The (71-70) Mariners visit the (71-69) St. Louis Cardinals tonight (5:15).

Seattle is in second place in the AL West, 4.5 games behind the (75-65) Houston Astros.
