PG Sports—Weekend Recap (Sept 18-20)

The Vancouver Canucks concluded their training camp in Prince George Sunday with an inter-squad game that was decided in a shootout at CN Centre. More than $80k was raised during the three day camp for local minor hockey programs.

–The Canucks, who have returned defenceman Tate Olson to the Prince George Cougars, start their pre-season tonight (Monday) in Greater Victoria against the San Jose Sharks.

–The PG Cougars finished their pre-season 3-2-0-1 following a 6-5 exhibition victory over the Kamloops Blazers Saturday before 3,108 fans. Justin Almeida & Brogan O’Brien tallied twice each for the Cougars who start the season at home against Everett with a doubleheader Friday night at 7 and Sunday afternoon at 5.

–The PG Cougars roster has been reduced to 27 players: (17 forwards, eight defencemen and two goalies) after cutting two rookie defencemen. 18-year-old Riley Mohr has been reassigned to Notre Dame Hounds of the SJHL while 16-year-old Peter Kope has been sent to the CAC Edmonton Canadians Midget AAA program.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings lost a pair on the road falling 5-0 to the Langley Rivermen Saturday and 4-1 to the Surrey Eagles Sunday. The Spruce Kings are 0-4 and have been outscored by a total of 22-2. They resume action at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack against the 2-2 Trail Smoke Eaters Saturday (10am) and against the 0-3 Victoria Grizzlies Sunday (1pm).

–The Cariboo Cougars had a loss and a draw against the Valley West Hawks to start their Major Midget season. The Hawks took the opener 4-3 Saturday and that was followed by a 5-5 tie Sunday at Kin 1. The Cariboo Cats play the 1-1 Vancouver NE Chiefs Saturday morning (9:30) and Sunday morning (8:30) in Richmond.

–The UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer team has its first victory of the Canada West season 1-0 (Saturday) over the UBCO Heat in Kelowna. The two teams split a doubleheader with UBCO taking the opener 2-1 (Friday). The 1-3 UNBC men have their home openers against Fraser Valley Saturday and Sunday afternoon at 2:15.

–In women’s soccer, the UNBC Lady Timberwolves dropped a pair on the road to slip to 0-3-1. They fell 6-0 (Friday) to the University of Victoria and 1-0 (Saturday) to the UBC Thunderbirds. The UNBC women host Trinity Western Friday night at 7 and Fraser Valley Sunday at noon.
