Rail dispute continues into the weekend, strike date looming Monday

The teamsters union served CN with a strike notice yesterday (Friday) set for 10 am Monday, hours after saying it was taking down picket lines and workers were heading back to the job.

The notice says the union doesn’t believe any of the ongoing issues in talks are “insurmountable” and remains open to negotiations to prevent “any further work stoppage.”

During a 9-hour industrial relations board hearing Friday the teamsters, along with CN and CP-KC argued their cases, however, there has been no decision yet.

The hearing came after Canada’s rail network shut down first thing Thursday.

The federal labour minister responded Friday with an order for rail service to resume and both sides to go into binding arbitration.

Rail service stopped when CN locked out its workers after months of failed talks while employees at CP-KC went on strike and remain off the job.
