A new long term care facility is coming to Smithers and being funded by the province.
This was announced today (Tuesday) during a news conference at the Bulkley Lodge.
“The investment in the new long-term care homes in Smithers represents our government’s ongoing commitment to improving access to high quality, compassionate care for seniors in British Columbia,” said Minister of Health Adrian Dix.
The new facility will be built on Broadway Avenue near Dominion Street replacing the current 56 bed Bulkley Lodge and adding an additional 160 spaces.
“Many, many people have worked for this important day and the addition of these beds means more people will be able to age in the community they call home, close to their loved ones,” said Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen.
The yet to be named facility will be operated between the Province, Northern Health and Providence Living.
Units will be designed as “households,” each accommodating 12 residents, with every resident having a private single-bed room and bathroom.
Along with the new spaces, a 32-space adult day program would operate for older adults living independently at home.
“It’s what we want in our community, what we want for the people who live here, and we want it for everyone,” said Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill.
Construction will begin in 2028 and opening for residents in 2030.
