PG Council to talk water metering and garbage container fees

The City will be taking a closer look at water metering and waste container fees at Monday’s Council Meeting.

Mayor Lynn Hall has tabled a report to look at the implications removing the $30 fee associated with moving to a smaller City garbage bin.

Hall’s report describes the fee as disincentive, and says curb-side recycling is helping cut down landfill use.

“I’m hoping that will increase recycling,” says Hall, “We’re seeing less garbage in our containers because of the curb-side recycling, and that will promote more vigilance, I think, When it comes to being in tune with environmental issues in our community.”

The $30 covers container delivery, and administration work for the switch.

The other part of the report discusses bringing back the voluntary water metering program.

The program was developed in 2005 as part of the City Water Conservation Plan, and data showed a 30 percent decrease in water use where the meters were installed.

Hall thinks the old program was effective, but there can always be improvements.

“I think we need to do some work on it to see what we can do to promote that system, and whether or not there’s a take for it in the community.”

Hall’s proposal would see a set number of water meters be available for free each year.

The City will receive the report at Monday’s Council Meeting.
