Improvements coming for Highway 37, 37a, and 51

Several upgrades are on the way for three northwest BC highways.

This is to the tune of $196 million from the provincial and federal governments and will be seen on Highways 37, 37a, and 51.

“These are the highways that connect our region through to the border at the Yukon. The reason this infrastructure money is so important is not just its size,” said Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen.

Included in the upgrades are dedicated passing lanes for the first time, improved communication infrastructure, pullouts and chain up points, along with general highway maintenance.

“We all know the value of the minerals industry to our region. I’ve heard very clearly that the state of Highway 37 for many years hasn’t been safe enough,” said Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach.

Highway 37 is one of two routes that travels to the Yukon border from Highway 16 and feeds several mining endeavors in the northwest region.

“We are contributing together as two orders of government because we realize the northwest is the key to critical minerals not just for BC, but for Canada,” said Cullen.

“There have been all of these major developments up Highway 37, in the Golden Triangle, and that means an impact on the infrastructure,” said Bachrach.

Along with feeding mining operations, the highway provides access to several communities and First Nations like the Tahltan and Iskut bands.
