RCMP holding vehicle theft awareness event at Pine Centre Mall

The Prince George RCMP and ICBC are reminding the public to be careful of what they leave in their parked cars.

They are doing so by holding a special theft workshop in the Pine Centre Mall parking lot today (Wednesday).

Members of the public are being invited to approach the vehicle set up by police and “Spot the Target,” identifying some items that could entice thieves.

“We don’t think much when we leave things behind, but even the littlest thing – a quarter, a letter with your address – could be tempting,” Corporal Jennifer Cooper told My PG Now at the event.

“Lots of people don’t consider hiding their change or cell phone chargers, those are big ticket items even though we don’t consider them to be,” Cooper said.

“Garage door openers are attached to your house, if you’ve left your insurance papers with the address still visible those are clues as to where you live and how to get into your house,” she added.

Other items like gym bags, backpacks, packages, anything left visible with some sort of value could be targeted.

Those that visit the RCMP booth today can make a list of items that may be targeted and enter themselves into a draw for a prize.

The Spot the Target display will be up until 2:00 this afternoon.
