Prince George group participating in national women’s strike

Women across Canada will participate in strikes and protests on June 24th, marking the second anniversary of Roe V Wade being overturned in the United States.

Prince George is no exception, organizers are holding their own branch of ‘Women’s Strike Canada’ outside of City Hall from 2:00 to 5:00.

In a news release, organizers said “If you are asking yourself “why are Canadian women doing this if it is an American issue,” I want you to consider the current political landscape in Canada. Since 1987, at least 48 anti-choice private member bills or motions have been introduced in Canada’s Parliament and they continue to push to give fetus rights and strip them from women.”

They also cited a study from the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability that says 850 women and girls were killed in Canada between 2018-2022, an average of one every two days.

The release also stated “We are standing in solidarity with our American sisters in the fight to regain autonomy over our own bodies and existence. Many members of parliament have made it their mission to repeal our own agency over our bodies here in Canada as well.”
