Mayor Yu wants a task force to set “achievable goals” on downtown crime

Prince George Mayor Simon Yu says he wants a task force on the downtown crime issues in the City.

This is in response to a letter of correspondence sent to Prince George City Council by the Prince George Downtown Business Advocacy Group at Monday’s meeting.

“The last committee struck by the former Mayor was ineffective and did nothing to address the crime issues,” Spokesperson John Zukowski wrote in the letter.

“As policing falls to the City as a taxed responsibility, we need to have the ever growing issues properly addressed.”

The letter states Mayor Yu met with with the group to discuss the need for a working group to address the crime, policing and bylaws option to tackle these issues.

“Once I have all the data, I would seek your input, as a council, and perhaps form a task force to set some achievable goals to see if we can reduce the crime rate and improve the safety four our citizens here,” Mayor Yu told Prince George City Council on Monday.

“Just based on the stats over the last few years, it doesn’t look too good.”

Yu added he wants to learn more about how the crime is reported.

“We are in the transportation hub, we do have a lot of people that got released from the correctional facility onto the street as well, and there has been a lot of repeat offenders as well, based on the information I have, a lot of the people are from all over the place,” he said.

Yu said he would like to see more funding from the Provincial government to help the city deal with the situation.
