Costly collapses are becoming too much of a regular thing for the Prince George Spruce Kings.
Five unanswered goals in 6:04 sunk the BCHL’s most northern franchise on Monday, dropping a 7-3 decision to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, wrapping up a winless road trip on Vancouver Island.
The offensive fireworks began in the second period as PG jumped out to a 2-1 lead.
Kazumo Sasaki and Ben LeFranc converted on the power-play for the Spruce Kings while Jax Wisemer also responded on the man advantage for Alberni Valley.
In the third, Matt Kursonis evened the score at 2-2 just over a minute in for the Bulldogs.
Skogran Schortt put the Spruce Kings back up by one six minutes later capitalizing on a feed from Kilian McGregor-Bennett.
However, the offensive onslaught from Alberni Valley started shortly after thanks to a pair of goals from Hayden Stavroff and singles from Jacob Terpstra, Nicholas Beneteau and Ronan Buckberger.
The Bulldogs outshot the Spruce Kings 49-41 while going 3-for-5 on the power-play. PG went 2-for-4.
In his first career BCHL start, Markus Lam stopped 42 of 49 Alberni shots. Hlib Artsatbanov turned aside 36 Spruce Kings shots for the win.
Prince George (13-26-3-0) remains last in the Interior Conference, seven points behind the Merritt Centennials for seventh place. The Spruce Kings host the Vernon Vipers (25-16-1-0) Friday (7pm) and Saturday (6pm) from the Kopar Memorial Arena.
