Nick Avakyan made 34 saves for the Winterhawks, who scored the only goal of the 3rd period to gain a split of the doubleheader at CN Centre before a full house of 6,009 fans on Indigenous Night.

Riley Heidt scored a pair of third-period goals, including the winner with 45 seconds left as the Cougars erased a 2-1 deficit before 2,985 fans.

The (30-13-0-1) Cougars begin a 5-game road trip Friday against the (16-21-4) Chiefs in Spokane.

Prince George is tied with the Everett Silvertips for the Western Conference lead but the Cougars have two games in hand over the (29-14-1-2) Silvertips.

The (28-11-2-1) Winterhawks are two points behind the Cougars with two games in hand and two points back of the Silvertips with four games in hand.

BCHL: 

On Saturday, the BC Hockey League announced that five teams in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) will join the BCHL for the 2024-25 season.

The Prince George Spruce Kings are back in action on Friday (7 PM) and Saturday (6 PM) when they host the (22-9-0-2) Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

The (12-18-3) Spruce Kings are last in the 8-team Interior Division but are just a point behind the 7th-place (12-18-3-1) Merritt Centennials and three back of the (14-20-2) Cranbrook Bucks.

BC Elite Hockey League:

Okanagan Rockets  5  U18 Cariboo Cougars  3  (Indoor game Sunday in FS James)
U18 Cariboo Cougars  7  Okanagan Rockets  2  (Outdoor game Saturday in FS James)

The (20-6-2) U18 Cougars are in second place, two points behind the (20-4-2-2) Vancouver North East Chiefs and one point ahead of the (20-5-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Cariboo will visit the Vancouver North West Hawks Saturday night at 6:15 and Sunday afternoon at 12:15 on the Lower Mainland.

The (31-11-4) Vancouver Canucks host the (14-30-2) Chicago Blackhawks tonight (Monday) at 7:00 in Game 3 of a 5-game homestand.

It is one of six Monday games in the NHL.

Vancouver is coming off a 6-4 Saturday victory over Toronto.

The Canucks, who have won seven of their last eight games, are first in the NHL overall standings.

Former PG Cougars head coach Lane Lambert was fired Saturday as head coach of the New York Islanders.

The Islanders were 19-15-11 at the team of his dismissal.

Patrick Roy took over as Islanders coach and in his first game behind the bench on Sunday they beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 in overtime.

The Edmonton Oilers are expected to sign free-agent forward Corey Perry.

The Oilers put a club-record 13-game win streak on the line when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night at 6:00.
