Exactly 1 year after the Mt. Polley tailings pond breach, the United Steel Workers, along with laid off employees of the mine have organized a rally to take place in Williams Lake this afternoon.
Mayor Walt Cobb, says he decided to throw his support to the rally after receiving a phone call from Paul French with the United Steelworkers Local 1-425.
“These kinds of things are so crucial to our community. I think we have to support the workers. They support us as business people so we need to support them. It’s unfortunate that all 400 of them are not going to back to work yet.”
The mine has received approval for a partial restart that should see about 220 workers back on the job in the coming months.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 5pm in Boitanio Park.
“I think we will have a great turn out, I know we have a lot of support for the re-opening of Mount Polley, it’s crucial for our community.” Cobb said
Meanwhile another rally organized by the Secwepemc Women Warriors Society is also taking place at the entrance to the Mt. Polley mine site.
It’s calling all those concerned about salmon, water and Secwepemc homelands to attend and confront Mt. Polley.
