Great Beaver Lake Wildfire evacuation order downgraded to alert

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has downgraded the evacuation order surrounding the Great Beaver Lake Wildfire to an evacuation alert.

As of this afternoon, the BC Wildfire Service is reporting the fire is 48,396 hectares.

The wet weather that started October is helping out in the Prince George Fire Centre.

“Over the long weekend, we did see a downtrend in fire behavior across the fire centre,” said Fire Information Officer Pedro Roldan-Delgado.

“That is due to the rain that we got and the relative humidity.”

He added the area restriction for the Donnie Creek Wildfire has been rescinded, and the area restriction for the Big Creek Wildfire has been reduced in size.

For the coming week or so, Roldan-Delgado said they’re expecting some days with warmer temperatures and gusty winds.

“But we are seeing the downtrend, so we’re not anticipating too big of fire growth by any means,” he said.

“Knock on wood, but I do believe we’re on the tail end of the fire season.”

In terms of personnel, Roldan-Delgado noted they’re starting to downsize, but crews are still continuing to action some of the bigger fires in the centre.
