15 more displaced Ukrainian families set to come to Prince George soon

People fleeing the war in Ukraine are still finding new homes in Prince George.

According to Dick Mynen, a Share Hope Volunteer, 217 Ukrainians are currently living in Prince George within 81 family units and 15 more families are potentially en route.

In June, Mynen said 216 Ukrainians were living in Prince George.

The stream of new people coming in has not halted.

He said 12 families have come and gone to other cities in Canada, leaving primarily for school or work, and newcomers are still arriving regularly.

The school season is right around the corner, Mynen said many of the families who arrived last year have already enrolled their children in school and can avoid the stresses of that this year.

For those who are new, enrollment begins next week.

“School District 57 is very good at dealing with these situations now, from Ukraine and other countries throughout the years,” Mynen said. “It depends on the children and their capabilities of English… there is quite the range, but the schools they are being placed in are fully aware of the language barriers and the resources that are needed.”

He added housing, jobs, and daycare remain Share Hope’s top needs. Anyone who is willing and able to help with any of the three are being asked to contact [email protected].

Ukrainian Independence Day is tomorrow (August 24), Mynen said Share Hope will be taking around 130 Ukrainians on a camping trip over the weekend to celebrate and observe the occasion.
