Underused Prince George parks may end up for sale

Last night Prince George City Council moved forward with the implementation of a new parks strategy.

Parks planner Laurie Ann Kosec says the city needs to correct a green space imbalance

“Some neighbourhoods have an ample supply of park land, or even an over supply while others have an under supply. They may have a site that’s dedicated for park development but it’s not developed or some may have none at all.”

Kosec says they are looking to “re-jig” the system and make it more “equitable”

She added that underused parks may be decommissioned or sold to help fund new parks in other neighbourhoods and maintenance of existing green space.

Over the next 18 months the city will consult with stakeholders and the community to develop the parks plan. City staff assured council that any major changes or sale of parks will come only after the impacted neighbourhoods have been consulted.
