“Welcome change in weather” near Donnie Creek fire, rain falls on West Kiskatinaw fire

The Donnie Creek Wildfire, the second largest in our province’s history, is now an estimated 487,509 hectares in size.

“We did have a welcome change in the weather, 15 kilometres an hour winds today (Tuesday), but we have seen much cooler temperatures so far today, higher humidity,” said Fire Information Officer Julia Caranci.

“We have not had any rain so far today on the Donnie Creek fire at any of the stations we’re taking readings from.”

Caranci said with the activity they’ve had over the past couple of days, they’re fully engaged with structure protection in the areas where evacuation orders and alerts have been issued.

She said they’re still anticipating growth today, but they’re expecting less growth.

Caranci noted the fire is about two kilometres away from the Alaska Highway north of Trutch.

“It is possible that traffic may in fact be impacted on the highway in the next operational period,” Caranci said.

“We do want the public to be aware that that is a possibility.”

The West Kiskatinaw River Wildfire near Tumbler Ridge received rain today.

“The rain has allowed us to work much closer to the fire, we’re still working on that west flank south of Highway 52, east of Bearhole Lake Road,” said Fire Information Officer Forrest Tower.

“We didn’t see as much activity on the eastern side of the fire as we were expecting yesterday (Monday).”

Tower noted there’s been diminished fire behaviour on the wildfire due to cooler temperatures, rain, and wind not being as gusty.

He added there isn’t expected to be any huge impacts from thunderstorms due to the amount of precipitation they’re receiving.

“There is still quite a bit of work that we’re still engaged in around the entire fire,” he said.

“Specifically focusing in on that eastern side near One Island Lake, and then on the western flank, supporting Capital Power in terms of the wind farm.”

The latest estimate on the fire, which came at 8:21 this morning, has the fire at 19,714 hectares in size.

As of 4:00 this afternoon, there are 75 active wildfires in the province, including 33 in the Prince George Fire Centre.
