The unemployment rate in Prince George has risen by 1.7% since March.
According to Stats Canada’s May Labour Force Survey, the local jobless mark came in at 7.9% in May – it was 6.2% two months earlier.
Analyst, Vince Ferrao told Vista Radio the spike is due to fewer people working.
“The number of people employed was 49,300. That is unchanged from April and a year ago in May 2022, there were 54,600 people working, a bit of a decline.”
“There were fewer people working in retail and wholesale that was the biggest one (decline) and we also saw a drop in manufacturing as well.”
BC’s unemployment rate held steady at 5.0% – the fourth lowest among all the provinces.
In Canada, the jobless mark inched up to 5.2% after it was at 5.0 for five consecutive months.
Our country’s economy lost 17-thousand jobs in various sectors last month.
