PG Fire Centre to keep a close eye on Mother Nature during May long weekend

There are now 30 active wildfires in the Prince George Fire Centre.

Four of which remain of note and all are located in the Peace Region.

Fire Information Officer, Davin Richmond explains some of the new activity we saw overnight.

“There have been two new wildfire starts in the past 24 hours. One was in the Dawson Creek Fire Zone, which is currently being held after a successful initial attack and one is in the Fort Nelson Fire Zone, which is out of control.

Richmond and the rest of the PGFC will also be keeping a close eye on changes to the weather pattern that are expected to occur during the May long weekend.

“Coming into the Saturday, the ridge is going to start breaking down as a trough of low-pressure comes in from the coast and so with that, we can expect to see some increases in winds – especially on Sunday and Monday and some scattering showers, thundershowers along with some lightning and cooler temperatures coming late in the week.”

“With those increases in winds, we might see an increase in wildfire activity but without seeing how much precipitation it is going to be a dynamic thing to watch.”

Over 500 fire personnel are present at the North Peace Complex near Fort Saint John. This includes an additional incident management team that was deployed today (Thursday).

The largest blaze in the region is Donnie Creek at roughly 52-thousand hectares followed by the Stoddart Creek wildfire at 21,455 hectares.

In addition, the Red Creek wildfire near the Blueberry River First Nations is a shade under 3-thousand hectares while Cameron River is 385 hectares.
