Child and Youth Resource Fair to be held in Prince George as part of mental health week

A resource fair for child and youth mental health is being held in Prince George tomorrow (Thursday) as a part of national mental health awareness week.

The fair, put on by Foundry PG, Northern Health, SD57, the Native Friendship Centre, FamilySmart, Intersect, and the District Parent Advisory Council, will run from 2:00-7:00 tomorrow afternoon in the John McInnis gym.

The event will primarily focus on raising awareness for the mental health supports that are in place for youth in Prince George.

“It is really important to remember mental health is something we all have,” said Shirley Hogan, a Northern BC Canadian Mental Health Association spokesperson told My PG Now, speaking about mental health in general.

“It is not just something bad or to be concerned about. Just like our physical health, there are things we can do that can help it to be better,” she said.

Hogan said something even as simple as a quick text or call can make a world of difference in someone’s life.

“Sometimes we worry that if we can’t fix someone’s problems we don’t want to reach out, or we don’t know what to say… small acts of kindness can go so far, just saying ‘hey, I am thinking about you,'” she said.

One mental health resource she highlighted was Wellness Together Canada, which is a free and entirely online 24/7 mental health support with both adult and youth lines.
