CUPE 3742 is feeling the pressure of lower provincial funding and difficult working conditions.
41 members are expected to retire or resign over the summer, and the ‘blending’ of jobs could be a big reason why.
“They are blending positions… Taking one or two jobs, even three jobs, and blending them into one, and giving that one job to an employee,” explains CUPE 3742 President Karen Wong, “The expectation is they get all their work done, but you;re always going to have work hanging over you.”
The added workload is making the positions look less than appealing to job-seekers…
“Its a difficult situation, ” says Wong, “It is not a reflection of our school board, we really have a problem with provincial funding. They (Human Resources) have told the union that they have gone to the university and looked for applicants, they’ve had job fairs, and they’re not getting as many applicants as they used to.”
CUPE has also noted wage gaps of up to nine dollars an hour between CUPE clerical jobs and positions in the private sector.
