Vanderhoof town council is taking steps to restore the old Kwik Save Building.
A report on the condition of the building found significant traces of six different hazardous materials, including black mold, asbestos, and rodent feces.
Cost of renovation and reuse of the building is estimated at $239,250, while demolition would cost roughly $100,460.
Council believes renovation is best option in the long run.
“It is valuable as far as a downtown or main street landscape, and we want to see that worked into our community plan of revitalizing the Highway 16 Corridor,” says mayor Gerry Thiessen, “Its a building that is on a former gas station site…those are hard to build new buildings on.”
According to a discussion paper submitted to council, there is $94,143 remaining in the 2015 Capital Budget for the renovation of the building, and improved pricing may be available through a public tender process.
“We’re going to go to tender. We’re planning on doing that in the fall, and see what kind of prices we could get doing the work we want to do,” adds Thiessen, “Right now, all of our options include keeping the building.”
